ME 170: GRAPHICS/CAD

ME 170 is a class that focuses on the design aspect of engineering. This class started off with an introduction to design with lessons on different kinds of lines, points, and drawing tools. The class moved in to topics covering drawings and different kinds of views for part drawings. I learned when to use which drawing and the location on an engineering drawing of where each view is placed. I also learned how to hand-draw views of models given to me on graphing and isometric paper. One of the main topics in this class was Solidworks and how to use it. Assignments started off with simple parts eventually getting more and more complex and then ending with projects of assembly models of a product. On this page, you will my Cam and Follower and Ball Valve projects from this class.

Cam and Follower: Veggie Dicer 3001

This was the first real project assigned to the class for ME 170. The task was to invent a machine that is supposed to ease a simple everyday task in life. The requirement was to use a cam and follower, or in other words, take circular motion and turn it into linear motion. My team and I had to design our own CAM and product for this assignment. We ended up deciding on creating an automatic food dicer/chopper. We had to come up with functions that our product would complete and then what the benefits of our machine were. Along with the project came 3D modeling it in Solidworks with a motion study and a program written in MATLAB that could calculate the displacement of the cam at any given time.
